Keeping a litter box clean is not difficult, if you keep on top it. A few minutes spent daily can save time.

There are two main reasons for keeping the litter box clean. First is to prevent odors and an unsightly mess. Second, equally or perhaps more important is that the littler box meets your cat's high standards. A cat will not use a box that is not clean. If your cat will not use the box because there are clumps or the box doesn't smell "right" to him, there is little point in even having a litter box.

Do not use ammonia or citrus oils to clean the box. These products are toxic to cats. Also take care using scented litters, although they may smell good to you they be overpowering to the cat.
