Tips For Cleaning a Cat's Litter Box
There are two main reasons for keeping the litter box clean. First is to prevent odors and an unsightly mess. Second, equally or perhaps more important is that the littler box meets your cat's high standards. A cat will not use a box that is not clean. If your cat will not use the box because there are clumps or the box doesn't smell "right" to him, there is little point in even having a litter box.

To satisfy the cat's needs, you should scoop feces and urine clumps out daily. The litter does not actually need daily changing. Depending on the type of litter, and the number of cats using the box determines how often to change the litter.

If you are using clay litter, you may need to replace the litter daily, or maybe only twice a week. If you use clumping litter and clean the box daily you may need to change the litter every two to three weeks.

Make yourself a litter box cleaning kit that you can easily reach. Your kit should contain rubber gloves used exclusively for litter box cleaning. Also include a kitty litter scooper, plastic bags for litter collection, paper towels, vinegar, baking soda, and extra liners, if you choose to use them.

You may have to add some litter after cleaning out the clumps. To freshen the box sprinkle a little baking soda on top of the litter and then using the scooper, gently stir it in.

Note about box liners; they are a convenience to the owner, sometimes, but they certainly are not a required item. Many cats scratch right through the liner when burying his feces, making the liner useless.

Every time you change the litter thoroughly scrub and sanitize the box. Wearing your gloves, dispose of the soiled litter in a plastic bag, set the bag aside for disposal. Rinse the box out thoroughly with hot water. Spritz it down with vinegar, an excellent natural cleaner. Rinse again thoroughly, Make sure that no chemical residue remains. Dry the box thoroughly with paper towels. Dispose of the towels in the plastic bag with the used litter, seal and dispose of.

Before adding your litter sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda in the bottom of the box. Pour in a couple of inches of litter, don't put in too much, many cats prefer less litter. Level the litter out. Sweep and clean the floor before replacing the box.

Do not use ammonia or citrus oils to clean the box. These products are toxic to cats. Also take care using scented litters, although they may smell good to you they be overpowering to the cat.

Remember to scoop it out daily, keep it accessible, and odor free. Following these simple rules will help you to keep a happy cat and a clean box.
